Christmas Eve 2009

From our home to yours we wish you a wonderful Christmas Eve and Day celebrating the birth of our Savior and enjoying the gifts of family, love, and friendship that our Father has given us.

'Twas the night before Christmas,
and all through the world,
A message was preached,
a challenge was hurled:
Believe on the Son
and thou shall be saved!
The road to heaven with
His blood was paved.
Out of darkness of sin and despair
God's salvation - the fairest of fair -
was born in a manger;
no room in the inn.
God in the flesh, He died for our sin.
The angels sang;
the shepherds rejoiced,
Messiah has com!
The message was voiced
By joyous believers both far and near;
Christ has come!
Immanuel is here!

Our Family Christmas Traditions

Every year our family has particular traditions we follow throughout the Christmas season. Here are our most favorite:

Advent Tree (with scriptures to read each day)

Gingerbread Houses

Christmas cookies

On Christmas Eve day the girls and I make baked goodies. In the evening Gary lights a fire in the fireplace and I make hot tea and cocoa. Gary reads the Christmas story and we have a family prayer thanking God for the greatest gift. We then listen to Christmas music and enjoy the baked goodies and hot beverages.

We do lots of other things throughout the season but these four are done every year and have even been done before the girls were born. It's nice to look forward to these simple acts that our family enjoys!

Our Favorite Christmas Movies

Over the years our family has found several movies we really enjoy watching for the Christmas season. Most of these movies are for the entire family; however, a couple are for adults only and I have italicized these titles. List of our favorite Christmas movies:

The First Noel (Animated)

Polar Express (animated)

American Girl, Samantha

Santa Claus I & II (Tim Allen)

Holiday (Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz)

The Muppets Christmas Carol (Michael Caine)

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (animated)

Santa Claus is Coming to Town (animated)

White Christmas (Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye)

It's a Wonderful Life (Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed)

The Gift of Love (Marie Osmond, Timothy Bottoms)

While You were Sleeping (Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman)

Christmas in Connecticut (Barbara Stanwyck, Dennis Morgan)

Miracle on 34th Street (Maureen O'Hara, Natalie Wood, John Payne)

There are lots of other good movies out there and we will generally watch a few that are shown on broadcast television throughout the holiday season. Several of the Hallmark Holiday movies are really good but we've never added them to our personal library.

Do y'all have any personal favorites that you watch every year?

edited on 12/19 to add "wonderful life' to list

Busy, Busy...Dreadfully Busy...

"I am busy, busy, dreadfully busy
You have no idea what I've got to do."

~Archibald, VeggieTales (C)

Since last we spoke our family has enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner, celebrated a birthday, and put up Christmas decorations.

Thanksgiving was nice and quiet. I served the traditional turkey and trimming to the family and our guest, one of Gary's co-worker friends. We had a nice afternoon chatting about all sorts of topics.

The girls made our Thanksgiving pies. Here they are cutting out crust shapes for the tops of the pies.

The day after we celebrated Gracie's ninth birthday! Her birthday breakfast was fluffy pancakes, sausage and scrambled eggs. She requested a chocolate cake with milk chocolate frosting.

The cake decorations were a small doll-sized tea set with ladybugs on them.

Gracie received a Kimono Jenny doll from Japan. She has been asking for one of these dolls for a very long time and was so excited to finally receive this one as a gift. Gracie named her Sakura, which means 'cherry blossom.'

It didn't take long for Sakura to be at home with a makeshift kotatsu table and a lovely lunch.

Last week we woke up to snow falling!

The girls were so excited and quickly dressed so they could go out and frolic in the flurries.

There was even enough snow to make a small snowman!

Pixie decided it was better to stay inside where it was nice and warm!

Other than all the special days we have been moving things around and cleaning up a bit. The girls and I have been going through their toys, clothes, and books and seeing what can be donated and what they want to keep. I've gone through our old magazines and books to see what we no longer really want to keep on our shelves.

This week we are going through arts and crafts supplies! It's amazing what accumulates when you are not looking.

All of our indoor decorations were up by Monday evening after Thanksgiving with the exception of our holiday village which will be put up this coming weekend.

Pixie even tried to help by fluffing up the tree skirt!

I've had bouts of crying regarding my grampers as we prepared for Christmas; the one time that was the hardest was when I pulled out our Christmas stockings and found the stocking I made Grampers years ago when he started visiting us for Christmas over 18 years ago. I've yet to watch "our" movie - "White Christmas."

Tonight Gary is relaxing by himself after a long day at work and the girls are camped out with me watching "Santa Claus is Coming to Town."

Last night we watched one of our all-time favorite movies, "The Muppets Christmas Carol."

That's what's going on here at Country Roads...I'll be back soon to share some more of our favorite Christmas movies as well as some of our family traditions.
